Gantry Crane Power Supply: Cable Reel vs. Conductor Bar (Slip Line)

Updated: Jul 28

Advantages & Disadvantages Comparison

1. Cable Reel Power Supply

Advantages

  • Flexible layout, no long-track support structure

No need to install brackets along the entire rail; track relocation and site modification are easier. Ideal for rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTG) that require site transfer.

  • Higher electrical safety

Fully enclosed cable with no exposed live parts. Lower risk of electric shock, leakage, or arcing, especially in rain, snow, or dusty environments.

  • Independent power for each crane

Each crane has its own power system; faults on one crane do not affect others.

  • Good tolerance to track deviation

Minor rail misalignment, swaying, or foundation settlement will not cause power interruption.

  • No arcing or sparking

Continuous power transmission without brush friction, making it suitable for explosive or flammable environments.

Disadvantages

  • High cable wear and maintenance cost

Repeated bending, twisting, and dragging cause frequent cable damage. Special heavy-duty reel cables are expensive and need replacement every 3–5 years.

  • Limited travel distance

Most suitable for travel length ≤ 120m. Longer distances cause excessive cable weight and significant voltage drop.

  • Higher initial equipment cost

Requires reel assembly, drive control system, cable guide, and limit switches.

  • Occupies ground space

Cable movement area must be kept clear to avoid crushing by vehicles or materials.

  • Larger voltage drop

Requires larger cable cross-section for long-distance high-power applications, increasing cost.

2. Conductor Bar / Slip Line Power Supply

Advantages

  • Ideal for long travel & high power

Suitable for very long rails (hundreds of meters) with low impedance and small voltage drop. Perfect for heavy-duty, continuous operation.

  • Lower long-term operating cost

Conductor bar service life up to 8–15 years. Only wearing parts are current collector brushes, which are cheap and easy to replace.

  • No ground obstruction

Installed overhead along the rail, not affecting ground traffic or material stacking.

  • Stable power for continuous production

Reliable contact power supply with no risk of cable jamming or breaking.

  • Cost-effective for multiple cranes

Multiple gantry cranes can share one set of conductor bars, reducing overall investment.

Disadvantages

  • Complex installation and civil work

Requires full-line supports, hangers, and high installation accuracy. Rail deformation directly affects operation.

  • Safety risks from exposed live parts

Arcing may occur at brushes and joints. Risk of short circuit in wet, icy, or dusty conditions.

  • Low tolerance to track misalignment

Crane swaying or rail deviation easily causes collector wear, derailment, or burning.

  • Poor site flexibility

Fixed installation makes track relocation difficult. Not suitable for cranes that need to transfer sites.

  • Frequent maintenance in harsh environments

Requires regular cleaning, dust removal, and brush adjustment, especially outdoors or in dusty mines.
